Does merino wool itch? Facts and myths about wearing it
What is merino wool?
Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, bred for their exceptionally fine, soft fleece. The cool, mountainous conditions in which they live produce fibres of remarkable fineness — and that fineness is what makes merino so gentle on skin. It's one of the thinnest wools in the world, which is exactly why it works so well for garments worn directly against the body.
Why doesn't merino wool itch?
The main reason merino doesn't cause that scratchy feeling is its structure. Merino fibres measure less than 24 microns in diameter — fine enough to bend against skin rather than prickle it. Coarser wool from other breeds has thicker fibres that stand upright and irritate; merino is too fine to do that.
On top of that, merino is naturally hypoallergenic. It rarely causes skin reactions even for people with high sensitivity.
What else makes merino worth wearing?
Beyond the no-itch factor, merino has a few other qualities worth knowing about:
- Temperature regulation: merino adapts to your body — it insulates in the cold and helps cool you when it's warm. One material, all year round.
- Breathability: it wicks moisture away from skin, keeping you dry even during physical activity.
- Odour resistance: natural antibacterial properties mean merino garments stay fresh far longer than synthetic alternatives. Fewer washes, less fuss.
- Durability: despite its delicacy, merino is genuinely tough. Cared for properly, it lasts for years without losing its properties.
When should you choose merino?
If you want clothing that's comfortable, durable and functional all at once, merino is a strong choice. It works for everyday wear and holds its own in more demanding conditions — hiking, winter travel, long days out.
