Does wool generate static electricity?

One of wool's advantages over synthetics is that it generates static electricity far less often.
It can happen — but it's not a natural characteristic of wool, unlike many synthetic fibres. Here's why.

Where does static come from?

Static is the build-up of electrostatic charge. It happens most often when the air is very dry — in winter, during the heating season.
The less moisture in the air, the easier it is for charge to jump.

How does wool behave?

Wool is a natural, hygroscopic fibre — meaning it absorbs moisture from its surroundings.
This makes it far less prone to static than polyester or acrylic.
Synthetics don't regulate moisture. That's why they're the ones that "spark".

So why does a wool sweater sometimes generate static?

Usually the wool itself isn't the culprit.
Other factors are more likely:

— very dry air indoors
— a polyester layer underneath
— a synthetic coat lining
— friction against synthetic materials
Often just changing what you wear underneath is enough to make the problem disappear.

What helps?

No special sprays needed.
Usually all it takes is:

— a humidifier in winter
— natural layers underneath (cotton, silk)
— avoiding synthetic linings

Sometimes the solution is simpler than it looks.
Wool isn't a material that naturally "likes" static.
If something's happening, it's worth looking at the bigger picture — the air, the layers, the environment.
