Why merino wool can smell at first – and what to do about it

If you open a parcel with a new woollen piece and notice a faint sheepy smell — relax, it's completely natural. 🐑
It means you're holding real, natural wool in your hands, not a synthetic fibre pretending to be nature.

Merino wool contains lanolin — a natural sheep fat that protects the fibres from moisture, bacteria and dirt. It's what allows wool to "self-clean" and resist absorbing odours as readily as other materials. But that same lanolin can also be the source of a distinctive smell — especially in new products that haven't yet been worn or aired.

The smell usually fades quickly. All you need to do is:

  1. Air it out — ideally outside, in a dry and shaded spot.

  2. Wear it — after a few uses the wool absorbs the scent of your surroundings and becomes neutral.

  3. Freshen with the freezer — put the woollen piece in a sealed zip-lock bag (or a cotton pillowcase inside a plastic bag) and leave it in the freezer for 1–2 days. The cold refreshes the fibres and helps reduce the smell.

What at first seems like a "sheepy smell" is really nature's signature — something that fades, but reminds you that your woollen piece is genuine, natural and living at its own rhythm.
