How to wash a wool blanket?

How to care for wool blankets

Wool blankets, especially those made from merino wool, are luxurious and durable home items that deserve proper care. With the right attention, your merino blanket will look and feel beautiful for many years.

Here are a few tips for caring for your wool blanket:

1. Washing wool products

Merino wool is naturally resistant to dirt and odours, so your blanket won't need washing very often. When it does need washing, hand wash in lukewarm water with a gentle wool detergent. Avoid rubbing or wringing.

2. Drying flat

After washing, wool blankets should be dried flat on a clean surface. Never tumble dry or hang on a line — the weight of wet wool can stretch the fabric.

3. Avoiding strong heat sources

Merino wool can be damaged by excessive heat. Keep your blanket away from radiators, direct sunlight and tumble dryers.

4. Storage

When not in use, store your wool blanket in a breathable cotton bag or well-ventilated drawer. Avoid plastic bags — wool needs air circulation.

5. Regular airing

Merino wool has natural antibacterial properties and is odour-resistant. Simply air your blanket outdoors or in a ventilated room between washes to keep it fresh.

6. Spot cleaning

If a stain appears on your blanket, act quickly. Gently blot with cold water. Avoid rubbing — use a wool-specific stain remover if needed.

7. Professional cleaning

If you are unsure, a professional wool specialist can clean your blanket safely. Avoid standard dry cleaning.
