How to care for wool products — a complete guide

Merino wool is an exceptional material that offers unrivalled comfort, warmth and durability. Products made from this natural fibre do require proper care to preserve their qualities over time.

Wool care

Below you'll find a complete guide to caring for your wool products from Owca.

General wool care principles

- Hand washing: Wool products wash best by hand in lukewarm water with a gentle wool detergent. Avoid rubbing or wringing.

- Gentle brushing: Products such as merino jumpers can be carefully brushed with a soft cashmere brush to remove pilling and keep the fabric looking fresh.

1. Washing merino wool products

To wash merino wool, use specialist wool detergents or gentle fabric cleaners. Avoid strong detergents, bleach or fabric softener — they can damage the delicate fibres.

2. Drying

After washing merino wool, gently squeeze out excess water — never wring. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel, reshaping gently. Avoid tumble drying and direct sunlight.

3. Avoiding moisture

Wool products should be kept away from prolonged contact with moisture. Store them in a well-ventilated place.

4. Storage

Store wool products in breathable cotton bags or well-ventilated drawers. Avoid hanging — wool can stretch under its own weight.

5. Refreshing and airing

Merino wool is naturally antibacterial and odour-resistant. Between washes, simply air your pieces outdoors or in a ventilated room.

6. How to store merino wool products

Proper care between seasons will help your wool pieces last for years. Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from direct sunlight.

7. Can merino wool be ironed?

Merino wool rarely needs ironing. If necessary, use a steam iron on the lowest setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
