Merino hats: types, how to choose the right fabric and colour

There's nothing quite like warmth that doesn't overheat — and that's exactly what we love about merino wool hats. Light, breathable, soft and practically universal. But how do you choose the right one? Here are a few things worth knowing before you buy.

1. Weight — how much warmth is in the hat?

A lighter merino hat (around 180–250 g/m²) works beautifully in autumn, spring or under a helmet. Heavier models, from 300 g/m² upwards, are real winter performers — they protect against frost while still letting the head breathe.
At OWCA you'll find hats in different knit constructions — from smooth to boiled wool with a soft fleece-like texture.

2. Composition — 100% merino or a blend?

Pure merino is the ultimate in comfort: softness, temperature regulation and no itching.
But some models include a little mohair, alpaca, cotton or acrylic — and that's not a bad thing. A touch of plant or synthetic fibre increases durability and stretch, helping the hat keep its shape longer and fit the head more easily.

3. Colour — match your mood (or don't)

There are no rules with hats: go for something classic in ecru, grey or caramel, or make a statement with colour — fiery orange, raspberry fuchsia, deep navy or burgundy all have their devoted fans. At OWCA we believe a good hat should suit not just your coat, but above all your mood.

4. Style — fitted or relaxed?

The turned-up beanie is the most popular choice — it protects the ears well and is a classic that never gets old. Looser styles add a laid-back urban edge and look great even with thick hair.

5. Occasion and season

For everyday wear, choose something light and breathable. For winter walks, go for a thicker model with a double layer.
Whatever you choose, all merino hats share one thing: natural warmth and a timeless look.
